Last of the Great Skimming Dishes
Oil on canvas 24”x 36”
I grew up overlooking the busy Solent watching the summer yacht regattas which fuelled my love of classic yachts.
“America’s Cup off Sandy Hook” and “Last of the Great Skimming Dishes” depict the 1903 America’s Cup race between Reliance and Shamrock III off Sandy Hook. Skimming dish referred to the shallow hull of yachts like Reliance which made them skim across the surface of the water. Reliance was the last of these and the most extreme. After this race series, these yachts were considered too dangerous to continue racing.
Mariquita, Mariette and Tuiga are racing in the “Westward Cup” off Cowes in the Solent.
All of these paintings are in private collections except for “Last of the Great Skimming Dishes” which was stolen from the Paul Mason Gallery. These prints will soon be available to order as limited edition prints.
