Twilight is, to me, magical. The time that is neither night nor day, a time suspended between two worlds where colours glow with an ephemeral luminosity. In the gloaming of the British Isles, the evenings feel like time has stood still as the light lingers on after sunset. These paintings seek to capture that feeling.
Low Tide, Upper Pool and A Sultry Walk Along the Thames were conceived on an evening stroll along the Thames at Wapping on a very hot July evening; an evening so humid and still that the city seemed to pause to catch it's breath. The light was incredible and the spell was eventually broken by a thunderstorm.
Twilight Across the River Fal was inspired by an evening in Falmouth and a chance encounter of this scene of the Griffin Elara in the dry dock with welder's torches throwing golden sparks into the evening sky. The panorama took my breath away and I had to recreate it on canvas.
Beach Huts at Sunset is taken from the view of the huts at the west end of Lee on Solent on a chilly winter's evening. For a few brief moments, the huts were lit up gold by the low sun as it set.
